Title #1, Chapters: 1 2 3 4 5 6 .
Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Video: Broken
Notes: Broken is a collection of music videos from the album of the same name with faux-snuff interludes to tie things together. The video as a whole was a conceived by Trent Reznor and Peter Christopherson - as I understand.
Source: The source of this upload is from Trent Reznor's torrent that he uploaded to thepiratebay years ago. There are 5 files in my upload, 4 are untouched original files - the 2x jpgs, img and txt. I have remuxed (not reconverted = no quality loss) the video, audio, and chapters into an MKV for easy consumption in a post-DVD age. The original interlacing of the source video shows. As this release was sourced / leaked by Trent Reznor himself, it is reasonable to assume an upload here is fair.

Broken has always been my favorite NIN album - even though it was, technically, an EP - and the fun thing about it was that Reznor was disgusted with his then-label, TVT, which had put out his 1st album, Pretty Hate Machine. So just after Jimmy Iovine signed Trent to Interscope (which is, ugh, a corporate label, being a subsidiary of Time Warner, but they at least reserve that label for some of the better stuff that can be less-than-compromising, at best. Oh well, you take what you can get & get the best deal out of it. Really, the fact that it's a "corporate" entity is, well, it sucks for the ability of quality and not just quantity (record sales vs. critical acclaim), but if you're a good enough artist/musician, etc. & can pull off something amazing, having one or 2 previous albums which have already proven that this band is a winner and in cases like that the artist/band can be in a position to dictate the terms which he/she/they want out of the label viz a contract, probably the most important part (that must be in writing, as a clearly stated clause in the contract) of this is the demand of "complete control, PERIOD." and that means the final word on the final cut. Anyway, getting back to this super-cool, underground, snuff-ish film that Reznor collaborated on with the late, great, legendary Sleazy (Peter Christopherson), who was a co-founder of super-influential industrial outfit, Throbbing Gristle, was in the post TG dancier (acid/house, etc) group, Psychic TV and finally, with John Balance (who often went by "Jhonn", though his real name was Geoff Rushton...go figure), Sleazy & Balance were Coil, which was really intense. Very beautiful music and quite haunting, simultaneously. One other thing: Though I don't believe he really did anything that stood out the way Storm Thorgerson or Aubrey Powell's work did, nevertheless, he was made an "associate partner" at the legendary, awesome Hipgnosis firm which made record covers; theirs were probably the most art-worthy, meaning worthy of standing alone in a place like MOMA, etc. Plus they had such a demand for their services that they did a LOT of albums; so many in fact, that I can guarantee you, you have seen Hipgnosis covers, probably many of them; they did many of Led Zeppelin's albums, most of Pink Floyd's, Peter Gabriel's 1st 3 self-titled solo albums, almost all of UFO's album covers, and into the more modern era, they've done some work on at least 2, maybe 3 Muse albums, and there's more. WAY more. So, you can see, Sleazy (RIP), had a real knack for art, for the kind of aggro-industrial stuff which Reznor was into and Reznor, being familiar w/Christopherson, contacted him at his home in Bangkok, where he'd been living as a British expatriate for some years by then and asked him if he'd work w/him on this film to go with the music on the EP he had just done (Broken) and Sleazy who was such a nice, easy-going guy and if he was your friend he was a great friend to have. So when you watch this, remember Sleazy!!

Subject: A Clean Copy!!
Subject: A Clean Copy!!
Thank you!!! Thank you so much for finding this clean copy! I bought the VHS bootleg back in 1996 that I uploaded to here to the archive as well as other NIN things. I've been a fan big of NIN since 1992 (when I was 11 years old), before they became really famous after Woodstock 1994. The album Pretty Hate Machine and the Get Down Make Love cover song were in my walkman on a loop. I am delighted NIN went from obscurity to stardom and retained originality and soul since the late 1980s! What a gem to find the clean version of the Broken videos, a real grotesque horror show!!

Back in the 90s nin became very mainstream thanks to mtv. From kids in jr.high to college frat parties this newfound industrial meets death metal band became a household name. They were applauded for their progressive aggressive injection into the music scene known as alternative rock. Only true hardcore fans though knew the real story. Front man Trent Resnor was only ever matched by marilyn manson, but for some reason you had even older folks ok with nin and manson was villified and persecuted. My guess was his views on religion......which this movie certainly lacks that. What Resnor portrays in this short film containing the videos that are the soundtrack(interesting concept) is devoid of any resemblance of religion, morals,or standards of living! Its a raw look into the deep dark world of the criminally insane. Evil in its purest form. It shows what happens in the real world that we all hear about but never actually get to see with our own eyes! I remember the first time i saw it,i felt odd. Like a demon was looming over me to see if i was gonna flinch. I had an original bootleg copy but cant find it. Its available now under fair use act or somesuch. So if you dare, enjoy!

Broken was one of the first albums I owned. 2 years old when it came out, 12 when I found the cassette under a school bleacher. At this age I was mostly listening to hip hop and street punk; mostly Dead Boys, The Distillers, Rage & Zibrahead, Del The Funky Homosapein. Finding this tape was the reason for me picking up guitar, drums, music production & audio engineering and everything else related to music. Yeah, NIN was the breakthrough. Seeing this video, the old vhs effects, and it's quality in artistic production takes me back to the early 90's and ultimately the music that shaped who I am and where I am today.
